BugMeNot

BugMeNot is a Firefox extension that allows you to bypass compulsory web registration via the right-click context menu.

Say what?

Here’s an example. A friend sends you a link that sends you to a news article on, oh, let’s say, the New York Times. You click on said link, and instead of reading the actual article, you are reading a page that tells you in order to view this article, you have to fill out a registration form and become a member.

“I just wanna read the article,” you moan, withering on the floor.

Enter BugMeNot.

BugMeNot in action

Now you just have to right-click on either the user name or password field, select “Login with BugMeNot,” and you are instantly logged in, using any one of several user-submitted public accounts, with their names and passwords.

This is used for mandatory, free registration, and not for pay sites. Also make a note: I am not the owner, developer, creator or maintainer of BugMeNot’s service. I simply wrote the Firefox extension that hooks in to the service. If you have any questions, praise, comments or complaints about the actual service, then visit bugmenot.com for full details of their service.

Okay, enough reading- how do I install this thing?

Fair question. Go here and follow the directions:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6349

For those of you that say it does not work, could you be a little more specific? It doesn’t work, as in you don’t even see an option to choose BugMeNot, or you can’t use it to login to a site because there’s no available username and password?

I can certainly help with the former, but not with the latter. As I initially stated, I have nothing to do with the actual service, and cannot guarantee a working login. That has solely to do with the database that is maintained elsewhere. This is just how the service works- it’s dependent upon other people’s registered accounts.

Also remember that this is for mandatory free registration sites, i.e. the New York Times, LA Times, etc. It’s not going to work for paid or private sites, i.e. porn, Paypal, etc.

The extension works well for me - thank you!

Is there any way this extension could be, er, extended, so that it can be used to submit login information to bugmenot.com?

  6. Eric wrote:

A great suggestion, Nicole. I will look into that and see if something could be worked out.

    Why?

  8. Nicole J. LeBoeuf wrote:

    Eric,

Thank you! That would be excellent if it could be done; would make giving back to the “bugmenot community” easier. But I’m not familiar enough with what goes into the programming to even know if it’s a reasonable request.

    Marcello,

It appears in your right-click menu only. Right-click in a login form, and you’ll see “login with bugmenot” as one of your context-sensitive menu options.

For further details, refer to the screenshot provided at the top of this very page.

  9. Euchre wrote:

When trying to install this into SeaMonkey, all you get is the error message “Install script not found.”
That’s really annoying, almost as much as sites that nag you to register…
I really like and use this extension a lot, please rectify that situation.

  10. userX wrote:

Thanks for your work, eric! It works great for me (FF 2.0.0.12)!

LiveLeak.com, upon login failure, brings you to the front page with a message at the top stating that the login failed… can you look for that and try another login/pass combo? Sorry, I program servers… unlike you, an uber client-side programmer. ;)

    Thanks.

  12. Titannick wrote:

You dont need to install it.
When you run into a page that needs registration,
just go to http://www.bugmenot.com and enter the page’s address.
The more extensions you install into your firefox, the slower it will render pages, and the longer it will take to boot firefox.

  13. Michael wrote:

Every time I’ve tried to use this for the past year or so, every username/password I’ve tried has failed to work. It seems like the websites have figured out how to defeat this.

I’ve tried it mostly on sites that require registration to make a comment. I’ve also tried on a few news sites, incl. the New York Times, which also defeats it.

  14. Eric wrote:

First: any comment asking for any usernames or passwords (especially for paid sites) will be deleted and marked as spam. This is not the place to get them; it’s either in Bugmenot.com’s database or it isn’t; there is no middle ground here to locate working passwords for you.

Second: I have heard that nothing is working for any sites for a while now, and honestly, every time I try the classic litmus tests of latimes and nytimes, I can successfully log in every single time. I don’t know what to say to you, other than to help the database retain useful logins by submitting your own usernames and passwords. This is the only way to keep the service working.

Third: To those of you who say it works fine, then great! Thanks for using it. I appreciate your comments.

  15. Eric wrote:

@Euchre: I haven’t used SeaMonkey in ages, and truthfully didn’t think it was used that much anymore. I will try and make it compatible for SeaMonkey users soon.

@Joseph: I just tried Liveleak.com and I logged in with no problems.

  16. freerk wrote:

    Hi,

the extention is great, I used it a lot. But on the new Firefox 3beta3 it doesn’t work. It says it is disabled because it doesn’t allow safe updates.

Maybe you can fix that. In some weeks/month (after the final Firefox 3.0 release) many people will switch, and so it would be great if the bugmenot addon would work.

    thanks,
    Freerk

@freerk: Are you getting the latest version from Mozilla’s add-ons site from the link posted above? Any extension from there should not have that error message, because it is considered a secure site. Try uninstalling your BugMeNot extension and then installing it from Mozilla’s site.

If an extension is being hosted elsewhere, then yes, it has to have a “safe update” method or else it won’t install.

There’s a way to bypass this, although it’s put in place for a reason.

Developers who choose to host their own extensions can use McCoy to make their updates “safe.”

I’m sorry, but Nick, you’re an idiot. What exactly is the point of trying to log into MySpace using a public username/password? What do you actually think you’re going to accomplish, aside from, my guess is, spamming someone’s page? Nevermind the point that you’ve completely ignored the actual purpose of BugMeNot service and this add-in.

I’ve not used the add-in in some time, and hadn’t noticed that it was not updating. I was on 1.3 and just today noticed that Firefox couldn’t just find any updates for it - got errors when it checked. Presumably the add-in got relocated or something? Anyway went looking, found 1.5, installed and working just fine. Haven’t ever really experienced any issues with 1.3 or earlier, and 1.5 looks just as good.

If you’re having trouble, the very first thing to do is go to BugMeNot.com and read up and understand what the ACTUAL, REAL purpose of the service is. Then come back here and read the blurb about the extension. It’s not that hard.

Because I bet, 9 times out of 10, it’s your fault, probably because you didn’t understand.

P.S. Damon: I’m on a Mac. Works fine. Read the instructions.

  27. Eric wrote:

TK, you’re right on the money. I think people just expect it to work for every site in existence, no matter what the purpose is. I had someone write me an angry e-mail complaining that they couldn’t log in to Amazon. Why on earth would you need a random Amazon account log in, unless you wanted to just steal merchandise?

And yes, those who have version 1.3 will need to manually update via Mozilla’s extension page. The extension has physically changed server locations, and I haven’t figured out a smooth way to send an update from my old subdomain to Mozilla’s servers.

  28. RyanVM wrote:

Eric, can you update BugMeNot’s AMO listing to give it 3.0b4pre support?

  29. Eric wrote:

@ RyanVM- I can’t yet. Mozilla won’t let me state that it’s compatible with 3.0b4pre. I’ll be able to pretty soon, though. Soon the release candidate will be out, and then 3.0.* will take care of all the minor releases.

The new 1.6 version of BugMeNot that will have this new support will also have an Italian localization (thanks Andrew!) and Flock support.

I have tried to get it working with SeaMonkey, from Euchre’s request, but so far no success. I have only an old javascript install script to tinker around with, and it is failing at the chrome registration. There’s no reason why it wouldn’t work with SeaMonkey, but it is this initial installation script that is making it peter out.

I’ll keep trying, but if anyone can help me out with that, I’d be grateful. If anyone can get it working with SeaMonkey, I will certainly add their name to the permanent list of contributors in the extension.

@pstemari: Yes, that’s the one I was trying to use for it, but I think the layout of files has changed a bit, due to the localization and new manifest file. The chrome registration is failing, so I think the locations have changed just enough for it not to work. Let me know if you get it working!

I got the same info from bugmenot.com, and it worked fine - don’t know why the ifo vanished before I got a chance to hit Enter every time when using the plugin. It _does_ work fine for latimes.com, and seemed to be working for washingtonpost.com (though the logins themselves weren’t).
